Viola Allen Mid Century Impasto Landscape Painting

Viola Allen Mid Century Impasto Landscape Painting

$300.00Price

Lovely vintage landscape of a bucolic, warm summer afternoon by Viola M. Allen (1906–1997). The hillside cottage and soft yellow fields bent by a light breeze showcase Allen’s beautiful impasto technique painted entirely by palette knife instead of a brush.

Allen is celebrated for this dynamic palette-knife technique, applying heavy impasto to create textured landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, and everyday scenes.  A mid-century American painter known for her impressionist and expressionist works, Allen was born in New York, and studied at the Pratt Institute and the National Academy of Design. She later moved to California, running a studio in Malibu and exhibiting with the California Art Club between 1955 and 1967.

Allen’s life and work is profiled in the book Emerging from the Shadows, Vol. I: A Survey of Women Artists Working in California, 1860-1960 by Maurine St. Gaudens.
